#181 Is strength necessary for Jiu Jitsu?
Due to the technical nature of Jiu Jitsu and it’s proven effectiveness against a stronger opponent, there is an idea often circulated that strength is not needed for Jiu Jitsu. This of course couldn’t be farther from the truth.
A characteristic of physical strength is the ability to hold a position in an isometric fashion. You can see how this might be necessary when trying to control and pin a resisting opponent. This is especially true when you and your opponent’s skill are equally matched. When technique is equal a strength advantage can be a great difference maker in the outcome of a match.
Of course there are other factors such as strategic and tactical but it is often true that many of the most successful athletes in Jiu Jitsu and combat are among the strongest in their class. This goes against the notion that strength is not necessary to be successful in the fighting arts.
At the same time without mechanical efficiency, proper timing and leverage no amount of strength will bring you victory. So while understanding that strength is a necessary component of Jiu Jitsu for performance and preventing injury, if your goal is to develop proficiency in the art that should be your primary focus.
Understand that strength is important and will continue to have it’s place while continuing to make progress there but never let it replace your technical competency. Just like you have to work hard to have a high level of skill, so too must your effort be in order to have strength to match. Do not let the idea of having flawless technique keep you out of the gym developing the strong physique of a fighter.
